Preconference Workshop: Five Tips for Developers Creating Applications Using APIs
Heard about APIs but don’t know where to start building something? Created an application using an API but don’t feel like it’s ready to share with others? This workshop will provide tips on how to identify and successfully incorporate APIs into a sharable application in a scalable fashion. We'll cover the basic principles, concepts and tools for interacting with APIs from authentication with OAuth to REST API patterns. Then, we’ll look at coding techniques for making an API-driven application sharable and scalable. We’ll review strategies for identifying and storing application configuration information, examine how to write tests for application and API interactions so you can be confident of the quality of your code, and discuss techniques for ensuring that your application can be debugged in the event of a failure in the API. Lastly, we'll talk about how manage community feedback and contributions to the applications.

Keynote: IT Project: Advancing Organizational Change
The "apartness" of Library IT within the modern research library is related to the kinds of mythologizing, stereotyping, and storytelling about both IT and libraries that we see in popular culture and reproduce in our own settings. Even as we continually rethink "the research library for the 21st century," these mental models can prevent the change we want to see. This talk explores the possibilities for rethinking IT and library initiatives to advance a more holistic, systemic way of understanding, envisioning, and accomplishing our work together.

Changing the Conversation: How Language Influences the Software Creation Process
You probably ask yourself questions like "What do I need the system to do?" all the time. But how could things change if you rephrased the question to be user-oriented? "What are the problems I want library software to help solve for my users?" Changing the conversation to focus on end-user problems can open the door to more creative and innovative solutions and build better collaborations with your developer colleagues, your library staff, and your service providers.

Using WorldCat Query Collections to Load Holdings into Third-Party Systems
This session will show how Lawrence Technological University Library uses the WorldCat query collections for ongoing updating of holdings in the statewide interloan system and for creating holdings for their link resolver product. By carefully constructing a search statement, it is possible to pull both MARC records and LDR holdings records for items your library owns and then formulate this for upload into another product, such as a union list of materials or a list of print periodical titles for a link resolver.

Pythonic Acquisitions: Automating and Updating Workflows with OCLC APIs
Using OCLC web services and Google Sheets, Westfield State University streamlined large and tedious portions of the selection and acquisitions workflows. In this presentation, we will look at this development process from front to back. Exploring the WMS Acquisitions API and some of the Python-based tooling we built around it, we will discuss strategies for building effective tools on top of OCLC services and working with OCLC APIs in a flexible way. Additionally, we will look at the triumphs and tragedies of deploying these tools and integrating them with services such as Google Sheets, Redis Queues, and SendGrid for a more robust system. By the end, we will have a better understanding of how even solo-developer libraries can use OCLC APIs to take some of the hassle out of workflows.

Dine Arounds: Brazenhead
Limited Capacity filling up

OCLC host: Eric Childress

We will be hosting dine arounds on Monday evening after the reception. “What is a dine around?” you ask. It’s a chance for you to network with your colleagues and OCLC staff outside of the traditional conference environment. Talk about the conference, talk about work, or skip the work topics altogether and just talk to each other. Whatever the topic, these dinners offer you the opportunity to learn more about your peers or get to know that person you have always seen at conferences, but never talked to.

These are pay-your-own-way dinners, so we will make sure to select reservations at a variety of restaurants to satisfy a range of dietary needs and per diems. Please use Sched to sign up for your preferred restaurant so that we can make reservations accordingly.

Transportation will be provided from the conference center to a central dropoff point within short distance of all the restaurants. After dinner, transportation will be provided from the dropoff point back to the conference center or the conference hotel. Return shuttles will at 8:15 PM, 8:45 PM, 9:15 PM, and 9:45 PM.

Dashboards and Artificial Intelligence in Libraries
In response to increasing Interlibrary Loan costs and librarian needs to better understand electronic journal use, one library created a statistical dashboard to see how often journal titles are requested through interlibrary loan at the university, college and department level, and provide detailed copyright costs. This presentation will demonstrate how libraries can use the WorldCat Search API to normalize journal titles. Wayne State University Libraries has also been investigating Artificial Intelligence and OCLC API’s to predict patron material use and provide automated support services.

Evaluating the Accessibility of OCLC Products
This presentation will discuss the methodology used to measure the accessibility of OCLC products. We'll discuss the origins of the methodology and how it is implemented at OCLC to create Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates, which document the level of conformance of a product to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and Section 508c accessibility standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Customers increasingly require conformance to these accessibility guidelines and standards in their product-purchasing requests. We'll conclude with a discussion of how one OCLC product moved from merely documenting the many instances in which it did not meet the guidelines to achieving nearly 100% conformance.

How MarcEdit Makes Use of OCLC's APIs to Hack Metadata Workflows
Libraries deal with metadata in many different formats and from a wide range of sources. There is no one-size-fits-all workflow. By utilizing OCLC’s APIs, users are able to decide how they want to work with their data and create their own workflows integrating a wide range of OCLC services and data that had previously been locked away in Connexion. This presentation will also take a quick look at how MarcEdit integrates OCLC’s services and will highlight the code developed to provide that integration.

On-Demand Batch Processing with the WorldCat Metadata API
The Dartmouth College Library has incorporated the WorldCat Metadata API into its workflows for distributing metadata that originates in XML schemas with a primary focus on sets of MODS records created for our local digital collections. In this presentation, we’ll discuss how we use the bibliographic resource and holdings resource operations to read, create, update, and set holdings on master records representing collections and individual items. We’ll also cover our Ruby-based simple command-line utility that only requires two arguments: the name of the specific operation requested and the path to an input file.
